A Threat That Can’t Be Stopped

Book Review: The Kuiper Rogue by C. P. Schaefer

Reading The Kuiper Rogue was an edge-of-my-seat race to the finish for me. It’s well-written and scientifically well-informed. I was unfamiliar with the tech, but the author’s skill allowed me to visualize it easily.

The threat of an apocalyptic event and the physical effects the crew suffer brings out the absolute worst in some of them. The event itself is based on science, but isn’t commonly used in sci-fi plots, making this story highly original.

And, the story was as much about how the people on this mission react to the unexpected as it was about how people can live in outer space. What happens makes me feel very small against the power and magnitude of cosmic phenomena. The ultimate takeaway is that the universe is not a very warm and fuzzy place for humans. We ignore that at our peril.

The main characters are easy to root for, and caring about what happens to them kept me completely engaged in the action. The climax of the book was shocking and well worth the read.

Thank you to CP Schaefer and BookSirens for a free advance reader’s copy of The Kuiper Rogue, given without obligation to give a favorable review. But, it’s terrific hard science fiction and I enthusiastically recommend it!
